Architectural Technologist – Building Reg Search

Yesterday was a day of drawing in Vectorworks, before you ask, it was all in 2D, it's still my preferred drawing method, although all new jobs are being considered for 3D. But that's not the point of today's blog, it was my use of the building regs.

The problem I had was I wanted to read the regs re ventilation to a bathroom in a refurb, I wanted to quote the extract rate, so I opened up the relevant part F PDF from within Evernote, and with right click I choose my preferred reader, and searched, now I generally use Preview as I run a Mac, the search openers up a list of pages along the left side that contain the search term, a small outline of the page and the headline, clicking on each outline just shows that page in full with the search item highlighted.

This simple technique makes searching the regs, or for that matter any technical document very easy, I have used this technique in Adobe's PDF reader the search function is not on the main title bar, but within the Edit drop down menu, but it works much the same.

Seasoned Technologist might be saying that this is old hat, and not worthy of CPD time, but I mentioned this technique to some students recently and they were amazed, searching for words by just scan reading takes so long, and believe me you will miss items, yet using the search function in this way is fool proof.

Below is a short video I made to show the search technique both on a Mac using Preview and Adobe viewer, I must say I prefer Preview. The photo today is of my screen just after recording the video.

The CPD time is not great here, but the saving in time looking for items or terms is huge.
